The band members chose their group name "311" because Omaha police used "311" for public indecency after their first guitarist received such a charge. Their self-titled 1995 album obtained platinum certification, along with multiple other platinum certifications. The band continues to appear on Billboard Alternative Songs charts.
The band celebrates 311 Day, which started in 2000 on March 11th, and performs extended shows that usually exceed 60 songs.
